This is a great milestone for the REEF team. In particular, here's a digest of what this milestone means for SNU researchers.
- REEF (Retainable Evaluator Execution Framework), a joint collaboration between researchers affiliated with Seoul National University's Professor Chun, Microsoft, UCLA, and other institutions, has been approved into the Apache Software Foundation (ASF)'s Project Incubator on August 12nd.
- ASF is the world's largest non-profit foundation for Open Source software, supporting around 230 Open Source projects worldwide.
- REEF's inclusion as an Open Source project signals its potential in the Big Data space, with development and contribution from outstanding developers.
- Apache Open Source Incubation has little precedent among domestic researchers.
- The Emerging Technology R & D Center of SK Telecom, which has been active in Big Data collaboration with Professor Chun, is joining the effort.
- The SNU and SK Telecom team is developing cross-framework in-memory grid for big data analytics on REEF.

차세대 빅데이터 분석 스택 REEF(Retainable Evaluator Execution Framework)가 아파치 재단 오픈 소스 프로젝트 인큐베이션을 승인 받았다.
REEF는 빅데이터 분석 스택으로, 차세대 하둡의 자원 관리기능인 얀(YARN)에서 빅데이터 애플리케이션을 쉽게 개발할 수 있게 통합된 레이어로 구성되어 있다. 분산 데이터 분석 환경에서 기존의 자원을 활용해 다양한 데이터 처리 서비스를 지원하는 것이 강점이며, 기계 학습, 그래프 처리, 실시간 처리 등을 매우 효율적으로 작업할 수 있다.
따라서, REEF를 사용하면 새로운 데이터 처리 애플리케이션을 훨씬 쉽게 개발할 수 있으며, 기존의 프레임워크를 연결해 활용할 수도 있어 편리하다. 또, 서로 다른 데이터 처리 프레임워크들을 통합해 최적화된 데이터 처리 워크플로우를 지원함으로써 데이터 센터 운용비용을 절감하고 전체 분석 시간을 단축할 수 있다.
REEF는 지난 미국시간으로 8월 12일 아파치 소프트웨어 재단(ASF)으로부터 오픈 소스 프로젝트 인큐베이션을 승인 받았다. ASF는 오픈 소스 프로젝트를 지원하는 세계 최대 비영리 단체로, 전세계에 걸쳐 230여개의 오픈 소스 프로젝트를 지원하고 있다. 아파치 오픈 소스 프로젝트에 참여하는 것은 REEF를 전 세계 우수 개발자들과 같이 개발하고 발전시켜 빅데이터 분야에 이바지 할 수 있는 것을 의미한다.
국내 연구진이 아파치 오픈 소스 프로젝트에 인큐베이팅 된 것은 전 산업군을 통틀어 몇 안되는 사례이다. 특히 이번에 승인된 인큐베이션 프로젝트에는 전 교수와 함께 빅데이터 분야에서 적극적으로 활동하는 국내기업 SK텔레콤 성장 기술원의 연구진이 함께 참여하였다. 올해 초부터 SK텔레콤 성장 기술원과 함께 분산 In-memory Grid 개발 등 REEF 를 기반으로 산업계에서 활용할 수 있는 어플리케이션 개발을 진행해 왔다. 산학 연구 협력의 좋은 사례를 구축함으로써 앞으로 국내 산업계가 아파치 프로젝트에 더 활발히 참여할 계기가 되었다.
오픈 소스 프로젝트 인큐베이션을 승인 받았다는 것은 REEF가 전세계 개발자들로부터 인정을 받았다는 것을 의미합니다. 지속적인 연구로 REEF를 발전시켜 각종 빅데이터 분석 애플리케이션의 기본 기술로 널리 사용되도록 꾸준히 노력하겠습니다.
